Grove was Intel’s first hire after it was founded in 1968 and became the practical-minded member of a triumvirate that eventually led “Intel Inside” processors to be used in more than 80 percent of the world’s personal computers. This is the first episode in my series on High Output Management by Andy Grove. It's widely considered to be the best book on management and by the end of this series, you'll understand why. I think Tobi Lutke, the co-founder and CEO of Shopify, put it best in an interview with Tim Ferriss: Andy’s book is unapologetically almost a how-to manual, that kind of deconstructs the world of business into first principles. It’s like, “Here’s what matters. Here’s how to think about it. No one needs a degree.” In this episode, you'll learn about Andy Grove himself, the early history of Intel, and the three core concepts of High Output Management. Then you'll learn about the basics of production, production operations, and how to deal with complications. In future episodes, you'll learn about how to apply these production principles to management. The authors of the bestselling Competing on Internet Time (a Business Week top 10 book) analyze the strategies, principles, and skills of three of the most successful and influential figures in business - Bill Gates, Andy Grove, and Steve Jobs - offering lessons for all managers and entrepreneurs on leadership, strategy and execution. In less than a decade, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Andy Grove founded three companies that would define the world of technology and transform our lives. At their peaks, Microsoft, Apple, and Intel were collectively worth some $1.5 trillion. Strategy Rules examines these three individuals collectively for the first time - their successes and failures, commonalities and differences - revealing the business strategies and practices they pioneered while building their firms. David B. Yoffie and Michael A. Cusumano have studied these three leaders and their companies for more than thirty years, while teaching business strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship at Harvard and MIT. In this enlightening guide, they show how Gates, Grove, and Jobs approached strategy and execution in remarkably similar ways - yet markedly differently from their erstwhile competitors - keeping their focus on five strategic rules. Strategy Rules brings together the best practices in strategic management and high-tech entrepreneurship from three path-breaking entrepreneurs who emerged as CEOs of huge global companies. Their approaches to formulating strategy and building organizations offer unique insights for start-up executives as well as the heads of modern multinationals.

Only the Paranoid Survive by Andrew Grove Andy Grove, founder and former CEO of Intel shares his strategy for success as he takes the reader deep inside the workings of a major company in Only the Paranoid Survive. Under Andy Grove's leadership, Intel became the world's largest chip maker and one of the most admired companies in the world. In Only the Paranoid Survive, Grove reveals his strategy for measuring the nightmare moment every leader dreadswhen massive change occurs and a company must, virtually overnight, adapt or fall by the waysidein a new way. Grove calls such a moment a Strategic Inflection Point, which can be set off by almost anything: mega-competition, a change in regulations, or a seemingly modest change in technology. When a Strategic Inflection Point hits, the ordinary rules of business go out the window. Yet, managed right, a Strategic Inflection Point can be an opportunity to win in the marketplace and emerge stronger than ever. Grove underscores his message by examining his own record of success and failure, including how he navigated the events of the Pentium flaw, which threatened Intel's reputation in 1994, and how he has dealt with the explosions in growth of the Internet. The work of a lifetime, Only the Paranoid Survive is a classic of managerial and leadership skills.

Lessons In Strategy From Andy Grove

20.06.2022

Andy Grove has strongly influenced my thinking about strategy in times of crisis. He wasn’t the visionary type of leader that Silicon Valley lionises these days. No, Andy Grove was a street fighter, a tough leader who had to make tough calls. Grove steered Intel through two life and death strategic situations - the memory crisis of the late 1980s and the issues with the Pentium chip in the 1990s. His book, Only The Paranoid Survive documents his process for making decisions and driving action. It’s a must read, if only as a counterpoint for most management books, which assume perfect conditions and perfect managers. In this video I summarise the key points from the book, alongside some broader context from the time and a few ideas on how to modernise Grove’s ideas. Recession and climate crisis dominate my work at the moment. These are messy, hard situations and it’s easy to fall into despair. Andy Grove’s ideas offer a practical exit ramp from that kind of thinking. A couple of notes on the video. I’m suffering from a bit of hay fever so sounding even more nasal than usual in places. And that buzz towards the end is one of my friends announcing the arrival of his baby boy. I kept it in for the memories! Hope you enjoy. Matt

Disagree & Commit...one concept that Andy Grove & Jeff Bezos agree on! If you’re not having conflict on your meetings, you’re not having good meetings. If you’re not having conflict on your team, you probably don’t have a cohesive team that trusts each other. With conflict: ideas are sharpened, people are challenged, and everyone gets better. ALSO with conflict: there’s often disagreement on the best way to move forward. What do you do when that happens? That’s what I talk about in this video... It’s a principle called: “Disagree & Commit”. It was popularized by Jeff Bezos and it’s a great way to: A. encourage conflict / disagreement B. encourage unity after the decision is made (no matter the decision) Watch the video to find out how it works. 😁 SUBSCRIBE here: 🤍 Check out what we're doing at Self Publishing School here: 🤍 Learn about booking me to speak here: 🤍 Watch my video on how to run great meetings (and how we run meetings at Self Publishing School) here: 🤍

Former Intel Corporation chief executive Andy Grove has died. He was 79. Grove's youth under Nazi occupation and escape from the Iron Curtain inspired an "only the paranoid survive" management philosophy that saved the chip maker from financial ruin in the 1980s. Intel said Grove died on Monday, but did not specify a cause of death. Grove was instrumental in building Intel into the world's largest chip company during his 37-year career there. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease.
